Why I Still Use Paper Planners in 2026

A Love for Planning and Stationery

I love planning, and I have been a planner for a long time. I have always loved stickers, stationery, journals, and planners.  I kept a diary as a kid.  I also used an agenda in high school.  I was so excited to learn that there was a whole planner community of people like me who enjoy planning and stationery. I guess people like me just really enjoy organizing our thoughts and writing them down.

I remember when the PalmPilot first came on the scene. I never desired a PalmPilot.  was still a kid, so I probably wasn’t going to get one anyway.  But I never wished for one or asked my parents to buy me one. I was satisfied with my day planner.  Every school year, I looked forward to selecting my new planner for school. I would keep track of my homework and birthdays.  It was just as special to me as getting a new backpack.

Digital Planning vs. Paper Planning

Don’t get me wrong.  I use my digital planner and iPhone for planning as well. But each type of planning has its place in my life.  For instance, I like digital planning for memory planning.  I like using the iPhone Calendar app for time-sensitive appointments. I use other apps for habit tracking or meal planning. However, I use my paper planner to organize everyday tasks.

My Favorite Planner Layout

I enjoy weekly planning in my Happy Planner.  Although I have used the dashboard layout in the past, my favorite is the weekly vertical.  I think I am fond of this layout because it was the one I used during the pandemic when I first got into decorative planning. I now use the vertical weekly layout to plan weekly tasks.  I also include appointments, birthdays, and events on the weekly planner.

Decorative Planning vs Functional Planning

With Happy Planners and most other planners, you can do either decorative planning or functional planning. Decorative planning has really evolved since I was in school.  I remember there were some stickers available back in the day (and we will leave it at that, lol).  However, the stickers were nothing compared to what they are now.  I mean, some of these stickers can be expensive, but they are very beautiful. They can be a great way to encourage you to use your planner.

I do enjoy decorative planning. I find it to be very relaxing and fun.  However, more recently, I have been doing more functional planning.  Sometimes life is just really busy, and I just need to get things done. Either method is perfectly okay.  The point is to be able to organize your schedule and manage your time.

Why I Still Enjoy Paper Planners

Ultimately, I still use paper planners in 2026 because I am old-fashioned in this way.  I don’t want to be in a digital space all of the time.  I like carrying my planner in my hand.  I remember things better when I write them down. I like referencing my paper planner quickly.  I don’t have to charge it or wait for it to boot up.  I can pencil something in and easily erase it when things change.  I can keep my planner open on my desk and glance at it quickly to see what my day looks like.

I find paper planners are constant.  I don’t have to worry about software updates.  Overall, I like the simplicity of paper planners. Planning is something I enjoy and look forward to doing. I like to have my tea or coffee and relax. It’s like journaling, but for the future. I like the tactility of curating my future on paper. Everything is digital these days. Planning on paper makes this experience more luxurious for me.
